19-year-old tries to stop robbers, thrown from second-floor of home

A GROUP of 12 youth pushed the grandson of a 65-year-old theatre artiste from the second floor balcony of her house in East Delhi’s Shakarpur area on Wednesday evening, police said.
They barged into her house and held the family hostage, police said. When the 19-year-old boy, Karan Verma, tried to resist them, he was taken to the balcony and pushed down.
He suffered multiple injuries after falling from a height of approximately 50 feet. He was taken to Max Hospital in Patparganj and discharged on Thursday afternoon.
Though the family claimed that it was an attempted robbery, police said the “miscreants were there to settle some dispute”.
They arrived around 8 pm, seeking revenge because Karan and his friends allegedly assaulted a member of the group last week, police said.
“We have registered a case of attempt to murder and house trespass. This is a fallout of personal enmity. One of the miscreants, Kunal, has been arrested,” DCP (East) Prabhakar said.
Karan’s grandmother Daya Sawant said she on the second floor of the house with her daughter and granddaughter when the youths barged in.
“One of them, who had his face covered with a black cloth, asked me to hand over the keys to the locker. Before I could stand up, the men snatched my necklace and a bangle. They also took away Rs 18,000 kept in the prayer room,” she said.
“As we screamed for help, Karan came upstairs from the first floor. They overpowered him when he tried to resist. They took him to the balcony and pushed him. But he managed to hold some cables, reducing the impact of the fall,” she said. By then, the neighbours came rushing and the assailants fled on motorcycles, she said.
